Marrie couple holding handsAfter all the effort we put in to looking good for our wedding day (not to mention the subsequent holiday) it seems the honeymoon period doesn't last long.

According to a new study, once they've tied the knot both men and women begin piling on the pounds and are twice as likely to be clinically obese than singletons.

Greek researchers, from the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity, announced their findings at a conference in Athens and suggested that it could, in part, be down to the sex.

A combination of dwindling sex lives and increased sofa time means the wedded waistline quickly bursts its belt.

It's the belly fat that's the problem. Once a couple gets married there is much less exercise and more take-aways as they settle happily into wedded life.

Of course, much of the stress and anxiety of singledom disappear so it's not all doom and gloom for the couples.

But as Dimitris Kiortsis, president of the Association, suggests: "Next time you are wondering what wedding present to buy a friend, perhaps a slimming course might be a good idea."
