Carla BruniMany of us have cringed about dodgy tagged photos from our past going public on Facebook but spare a thought for Carla Bruni whose provocative photos from her modelling days, depicting her in varying states of undress, will go to auction today.

From Helmut Newton's shot of Carla leaning on a piano with skirt riding up to Pamela Hanson's image of the model smoking a cigarette in tiny white underwear, the French president's wife may feel just a moment of regret.

And the timing couldn't be worse.

Both she and husband Nicolas Sarkozy are currently beleaguered with rumours of affairs on both sides – she with French singer, Benjamin Biolay and he with ecology minister Chantal Jouanno.

It's also not the first time that the French first lady's modelling past has caused some red faces.

Two years ago, just as the couple arrived for a state visit with the Queen, a 1993 image of Carla with nothing but her hands to hide her modesty went on sale.

That one sold for £60,000 at auction – something tells us these latest pictures will fetch even more.
